Filing Form N-400 Online or by Mail: Which Is Better?

If you are paying the full fee, filing Form N-400 online is usually the better choice. It costs $710 instead of $760 (as of October 2026), checks your answers as you go, and confirms right away that USCIS has your application. You must file on paper if you are asking for a reduced fee or a fee waiver, and paper can also be easier if you have many documents or a representative who prefers it.

How to file online, step by step

  1. Create a USCIS online account at my.uscis.gov. Use an email address you'll keep for years, and turn on two-step verification.
  2. Start a new N-400 from your account dashboard. You can save your progress and come back.
  3. Answer each section. The online version asks the same questions as the paper form, in a guided format. Have your trip dates, addresses and employment history ready. Our guide on how to fill out Form N-400 explains each part.
  4. Upload evidence. At minimum, a clear scan of both sides of your green card. Add anything your situation requires, such as marriage certificates, proof of your spouse's citizenship, court records, or military forms. Scan in color and make sure every page is readable.
  5. Review the summary. The system shows the whole application before submission. Check every date against your records.
  6. Sign electronically and pay $710 online.
  7. Download your receipt notice right away. It serves as proof of filing and, together with your green card, extends your green card's validity for 2 years past its printed expiration date.

How to file by mail, step by step

  1. Download the current edition of Form N-400 and its instructions from uscis.gov/n-400. USCIS rejects outdated editions.
  2. Fill it in on a computer or by hand in black ink. Don't use correction fluid. If you make a big mistake, start a clean copy.
  3. Sign it by hand. A typed name is not a valid signature on paper.
  4. Prepare payment. Use Form G-1450 for card payment or Form G-1650 for an ACH debit. Since October 28, 2025, paper payments are accepted only with an approved Form G-1651 exemption.
  5. Add the reduced-fee or waiver documents if they apply: Part 10 with income proof for the $380 reduced fee, or Form I-912 for a waiver. See the N-400 filing fee guide.
  6. Assemble the package in this order: payment form on top, optional Form G-1145 (for an email or text when the application is accepted) clipped to the front, Form G-28 if you have a representative, the N-400 with all pages, then copies of your evidence. Two passport-style photos are needed only if you live abroad under certain military or spouse categories.
  7. Mail it to the right address. The lockbox depends on where you live and how you're sending it. Check the "Direct Filing Addresses for Form N-400" page on uscis.gov the day you mail it, since addresses change.
  8. Use a trackable service, and keep a full copy of everything you sent.

Which method is faster?

USCIS doesn't promise that online cases finish sooner overall. Your interview date depends mostly on your field office's workload. Online filing does remove mailing time and the risk of a rejected package, which can otherwise cost weeks. Check current estimates at uscis.gov/processing-times, and see the naturalization timeline for what happens next.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from paper to online after filing?

You can't move a pending paper application to online filing, but you can link a paper case to your USCIS online account using the account acceptance notice USCIS mails you. That lets you track the case and get notices online.

Can an attorney file my N-400 online?

Yes. Attorneys and accredited representatives can create a USCIS online representative account and file for clients, along with Form G-28.

What happens if my paper application is rejected?

USCIS returns the package or sends a rejection notice that explains why, such as a missing signature, wrong fee or outdated edition. A rejected application counts as never filed, so fix the problem and file again.

Do I need to mail original documents?

No. Send photocopies unless the instructions say otherwise. USCIS may destroy originals you send without being asked, so keep them and bring them to your interview.
